Strut top mounts: when to replace them with the damper

The labour argument: why deferring the top mount costs more than it saves

When a strut damper fails, the strut comes out of the car. Every component on the strut — the spring, the bump stop, the top mount — is on the bench. Replacing the top mount at this moment costs the price of the part plus a few minutes of bench time. Deferring it costs the same part price plus a full additional strut removal, which on most cars means two to three hours of workshop labour.

That deferred top mount will fail. Every top mount contains a bearing (on steered axles) and a rubber isolator. Both wear at a rate tied to the damper — when the damper is replaced after 80,000 km of use, the top mount has 80,000 km on it too. Fitting a new damper to an 80,000 km mount means the top mount fails six months later, the knock returns, and the strut comes back out.

What a strut top mount does — and why it fails

The strut top mount sits at the upper end of the strut assembly and connects the strut to the vehicle body. It has two jobs:

  1. Isolate vibration. The rubber bushing in the top mount absorbs the high-frequency vibrations that pass through the strut. Without it, road noise and shimmy transmit directly into the bodyshell.
  2. Allow steering rotation (on steered axles). On front struts in most vehicles, the mount contains a bearing that lets the strut rotate as the wheel steers. Without a functioning bearing, the strut binds instead of rotating — you feel this as a scrubbing or knocking noise when turning at low speed.

Failure modes:

  • Bearing seizure: the steering bearing inside the mount corrodes or wears, preventing smooth rotation. Result: a knock or groan when turning at standstill or slow speed.
  • Rubber deterioration: the isolating bushing hardens, cracks, or loses its bond to the metal housing. Result: increased road noise, harshness, and eventual metallic clunk on bumps.
  • Housing cracking: on severe cases, the metal housing itself fractures. This is a safety-critical failure — the strut can separate from its mounting point.

The standstill-steering knock test

This test takes 30 seconds and identifies a failed top mount bearing with high reliability:

  1. Park on a flat surface with the engine running (power steering must be active).
  2. Turn the steering wheel slowly from lock to lock while the car is stationary.
  3. Listen and feel for a knock, click, or scrubbing sensation from the top of the strut.

A knock that disappears once the car is moving, or that only appears at standstill, is the bearing binding as it rotates without the load-distribution effect of the car moving. This is the top mount bearing, not the damper. A knock that persists at all speeds is more likely to be the damper itself.

Variation: have a second person press down on the bonnet corner while you listen at the suspension top mount. A knock under compression that does not appear otherwise points to a worn mount rubber, not the bearing.

When the top mount is always worth replacing

  • Any time the strut is removed for damper replacement. The labour is already paid. The mount is on the bench. Not replacing it is false economy.
  • The standstill-steering knock test is positive. Do not replace the damper and leave the failed bearing — you will hear the same noise in two weeks.
  • The vehicle has more than 80,000 km with the original mounts. Rubber isolators at this mileage are at or near the end of their service life regardless of how they feel on the test.
  • You are fitting a sport damper or a kit. A firmer damper transmits more load through the top mount. A mount at 70% of its service life under an OEM damper may fail quickly under the higher inputs of a B6 or B12.

When the top mount can wait

  • The top mount is new (less than 30,000 km) and the standstill-steering knock test is negative.
  • The strut removal is for a different reason (brake caliper, for example) and the damper is not being replaced — there is no added benefit to removing a serviceable mount.

Fitting notes

  • A spring compressor is required to safely disassemble and reassemble the strut. Do not attempt this without one — the compressed spring stores significant energy.
  • The top mount nut torque specification is critical. Under-torquing allows the mount to rotate in its housing; over-torquing can crack the rubber. Follow the vehicle-specific figure in the workshop manual.
  • Reuse the bump stop and dust shield if they are serviceable. Replace them if the rubber is cracked or compressed to the point where it no longer returns to shape.
  • A four-wheel alignment after strut reassembly is standard practice — even a small camber change from reassembly angle can affect tyre wear.

Frequently asked questions

My car knocks when I turn at a standstill. Is it the top mount or the damper?
A knock that occurs only during slow or stationary steering — especially when the car stops moving — is almost always the top mount bearing, not the damper. The bearing binds when the strut is forced to rotate without the load-distribution effect of forward motion. Perform the standstill-steering knock test to confirm.
Can I replace the top mount without removing the strut?
No. The top mount is at the upper end of the strut assembly. Accessing it requires removing the strut from the vehicle, disassembling it with a spring compressor, and replacing the mount before reassembly. It cannot be reached with the strut in place.
My mechanic says the top mount is fine. Should I still replace it when changing dampers?
A visual inspection does not always reveal bearing wear — the bearing may look intact but rotate with resistance. If the vehicle has high mileage, or if you are fitting a performance damper, the labour cost of a second strut removal later is the stronger argument for replacing it now.
Does the top mount affect my alignment?
Indirectly, yes. A worn top mount allows the strut to shift slightly in its housing, which can introduce small camber changes and inconsistency under load. A new mount restores the designed geometry at the strut's upper mounting point.
What is the difference between a strut mount and a strut bearing?
The strut mount is the complete assembly that attaches the strut to the body. The strut bearing (or top mount bearing) is the rotating element inside the mount that allows the strut to steer. Some vehicles use a combined unit; others have them as separate components. Both are in the strut bearings collection.
