Which variants this covers
This page spans the Golf from Mk3 to Mk8, including hatch, estate and the GTI and R performance variants, in both front-wheel drive and 4MOTION. Each generation uses its own struts and mounts, and cars ordered with sports suspension or adaptive damping differ from standard cars of the same age. For the Mk7 generation specifically, see Golf Mk7 suspension.
Choosing between the ranges
Bilstein B4 is the largest group and the OE-comparable choice: standard height, original springs, factory ride restored. Bilstein B6 is firmer at the same height and suits a GTI or R whose damping has softened. Tein EnduraPro is the alternative to B6, with EnduraPro Plus adding 16 damping levels. Bilstein B12 kits are well represented and lower the car on matched dampers and springs. Tein S.Tech springs drop a car running healthy original dampers. Bilstein B8 is a shortened damper for cars already lowered by roughly 30–40 mm and is the wrong part at standard height. B14, B16, Street Advance Z and Flex Z cover adjustable ride height.
What to check before ordering
Front and rear are separate parts; fit in axle pairs. Strut support bearings and protection kits make up a large share of this page for good reason — on a Golf they typically wear out before the dampers do, and fitting new struts behind a collapsed bump stop wastes the job. Align afterwards. The Golf caveat: 4MOTION cars use a multi-link rear axle where most front-wheel-drive cars use a torsion beam, so rear parts are not interchangeable.
Common questions for this chassis
Do GTI and standard Golf share dampers? Often not — sports suspension cars take their own part numbers.
Will Mk6 parts fit a Mk7? No. Select by generation and build year.
What lowers a Golf most simply? S.Tech springs if the dampers are healthy; a B12 kit if they are not.
