Which Bilstein is right for my car?

Bilstein makes six distinct suspension systems. The right one depends on three things: whether you want to keep factory ride height or go lower, how much handling precision matters to you, and whether you want springs matched to the dampers from the factory. Answer those three questions and the correct series becomes obvious.

Are you keeping factory ride height, or lowering your car?

This is the primary fork. Get it wrong and every subsequent decision follows from the wrong starting point.

Keep factory ride height. You need a damper replacement, not a kit. Your springs stay; only the dampers change. Your choices are the B4 and the B6.

Lower the car. You need springs and dampers matched to each other. Pairing aftermarket sport springs with standard replacement dampers overworks the damper — the spring rate exceeds what the valving was engineered to handle, service life shortens, and the handling balance is off. Bilstein solves this at the factory level: the B12 Pro-Kit, B14 PSS, and B16 PSS10 are each engineered as a unit. If you already have sport springs fitted to the car, the B8 is the correct damper — it is valved specifically for sport-spring rates.

Comfort or control?

Standard-height path. Skip to the next section if you are lowering the car.

Bilstein B4 OE Replacement

The B4 is a direct, like-for-like replacement for your factory damper. Same ride height, same comfort level, same handling balance — just new. If your car is due for new shocks and you want it to feel exactly as it did from the factory, the B4 is the correct answer.

It is not a performance upgrade. If you want the car to handle differently, the B4 is not the right tool.

Best for: high-mileage cars due for service; drivers who want factory ride quality restored; daily drivers that never see a track day.

Bilstein B6 Performance

The B6 uses the same fitment as the B4 — it bolts in at factory ride height — but with firmer valving. Body roll in corners is measurably reduced; steering response is more direct. On smooth roads, ride quality is close to OEM. On broken surfaces, it is noticeably firmer.

It does not lower the car. Ride height does not change.

Best for: daily drivers where handling matters; cars that spend time on mountain roads or B-roads; anyone who wants the factory look with sharper dynamics.

Do you want a matched kit, or do you already have lowering springs?

Lowered path. Both routes end at a better-handling, lower car — the difference is whether you start from scratch or work with what is already fitted.

Bilstein B12 Pro-Kit — the set-and-forget lowering kit

The B12 Pro-Kit combines Bilstein B8 performance dampers with Eibach Pro-Kit springs, matched and tuned as a single system. The springs lower the car approximately 30 mm — enough to close the wheel arch gap and lower the centre of gravity without turning the ride harsh. Because spring rate and damper valving are engineered together, the result is predictable across conditions: firmer than stock, but not punishing; improved handling at all speeds.

No adjustment is needed or available. Fit it and it works.

Best for: drivers who want to lower their car once and leave it alone; daily drivers that occasionally see fast roads; anyone who wants a factory-quality result without further tuning.

Bilstein B14 PSS — adjustable ride height for the street

The B14 PSS is a full coilover system: spring and damper in a single unit, with threaded collars that let you adjust ride height between approximately 10 mm and 35 mm below OEM. The adjustment is mechanical — turn the collar with the included spanner, no specialist tools required. Most drivers can adjust a corner in under 20 minutes.

Damping is fixed at Bilstein’s street-tuned setting. If you want adjustable rebound damping as well, that is the B16 PSS10.

Best for: drivers who want to dial in their exact ride height; cars that see different load conditions — track days, touring, seasonal road quality; anyone who wants coilover flexibility without full damping adjustment.

Bilstein B16 PSS10 — adjustable ride height and damping for the enthusiast

The B16 PSS10 adds 10-stage rebound damping adjustment to the B14’s ride height range. That means you can run a softer setup for daily driving and tighten it up before a track day without changing springs or touching the ride height. Both adjustments are external and repeatable — if you find a setting that works, you can return to it exactly.

The PSS10 is for drivers who actually use the adjustment. If you want simplicity, the B12 is the better choice.

Best for: track-day drivers; performance car owners who tune their setup between different conditions; anyone who wants the full range of adjustability in a street-legal package.

Bilstein B8 Performance — the correct damper for your existing sport springs

If you already have aftermarket lowering springs fitted to the car, the B8 is the damper that was engineered for them. The B8 is valved for sport-spring rates: stiffer compression than the B4 or B6, matched to the higher spring rates typical of aftermarket springs. Fitting a B4 or B6 to a car running sport springs underworks the valving and shortens damper life.

The B8 does not include springs. It is not a lowering kit. It answers one specific question: already have sport springs — what is the correct damper?

Best for: cars already running aftermarket springs; anyone replacing worn dampers on a lowered car without changing the springs.
