These parts matter more than their price suggests. A perished dust boot lets road grit reach the piston rod, which scores the rod and destroys the seal — the most common reason a new damper fails early. A collapsed bump stop lets the suspension bottom out metal on metal, which is felt as a hard knock over sharp bumps and shortens the life of the damper behind it.
The rule of thumb is simple: fit a fresh protection kit whenever you fit a new damper. The old boot and bump stop have aged alongside the part you are replacing, and reusing them puts a worn component in front of a new one.
