Which variants this covers
This page spans every 3 Series generation listed, in saloon, Touring, coupé and cabriolet form, in both rear-wheel drive and xDrive. Chassis codes run E36, E46, E90, F30 and G20, and a damper cut for one will not fit another even where the model name is identical. Cars ordered with M Sport suspension use their own part numbers. For the E90 generation specifically, see 3 Series E90 suspension.
Choosing between the ranges
Bilstein B4 is the OE-comparable replacement: standard ride height, original springs retained, factory ride restored. It is the default choice for a worn car. Bilstein B6 is firmer at that same height, with tighter body control for harder driving, and it is the largest group on this page. Tein EnduraPro is the alternative to B6 — an OE-shape damper, firmer than standard, with EnduraPro Plus adding 16 levels of adjustment. Bilstein B8 is a shortened damper and suits only cars already lowered by roughly 30–40 mm; fitting it at standard height will wreck the ride. Bilstein B12 supplies matched dampers and lowering springs together, and Tein S.Tech springs lower the car on its existing dampers. For adjustable height, see B14, B16, Street Advance Z and Flex Z.
What to check before ordering
Front and rear dampers are different parts and are listed separately. Always replace in axle pairs — a new damper on one side of an axle against a worn one makes the car unpredictable under braking. Renew strut support bearings and protection kits at the same time; both are consumables that outlive nobody. Book an alignment afterwards. On this model, xDrive cars take different front struts from rear-wheel-drive cars of the same generation.
Common questions for this chassis
Will E46 dampers fit an E90? No. The generations use different struts and mounts, and nothing carries across. Select by chassis code.
Can I fit B6 without changing the springs? Yes — B6 is a standard-height damper designed to work with the original springs.
Do I need coilovers to lower the car? No. B12 kits or S.Tech springs lower it at a fixed drop. Coilovers are for setting the height yourself.
