BMW 5 Series Shock Absorbers & Suspension

Suspension for the BMW 5 Series across its generations, in saloon and Touring form. Bilstein B4 and B6 cover standard ride height, B12 kits and Tein S.Tech springs lower the car, and B14, B16, Street Advance Z and Flex Z coilovers set it directly. Air suspension modules are listed for air-sprung cars.

Which variants this covers

Saloon and Touring bodies are both covered, in rear-wheel drive and xDrive, across successive chassis generations that share a name but not their struts. M Sport suspension carries its own part numbers, and Touring models fitted with self-levelling rear suspension differ again from the saloon. For other BMW models see BMW suspension, or the 3 Series and 1 Series pages.

Choosing between the ranges

Bilstein B4 is the largest group and the OE-comparable replacement — the right choice for a high-mileage saloon or Touring that needs its original damping back rather than changed. Bilstein B6 is close behind and is firmer at the same ride height, which suits a heavy car that has gone floaty without lowering it. Tein EnduraPro is the Tein alternative at OE height. Bilstein B8 is shortened and belongs only on a car already lowered by roughly 30–40 mm. To lower a standard car, Bilstein B12 supplies a matched damper and spring kit, and Tein S.Tech springs drop it on healthy dampers. B14, B16, Street Advance Z and Flex Z cover adjustable height.

What to check before ordering

Front and rear are separate listings; fit in axle pairs, renew strut bearings and protection kits with them, and align afterwards. The 5 Series caveat is the rear: Touring models frequently use self-levelling or air-assisted rear suspension, which takes entirely different components from the saloon's conventional setup. Confirm body style and rear suspension type before ordering.

Common questions for this chassis

Does the Touring share rear dampers with the saloon? Often not — self-levelling and air-assisted rear setups need their own parts.

Will parts carry between generations? No. E39, E60, F10 and G30 each take their own struts.

B4 or B6 on a heavy diesel? B4 restores standard; B6 controls body movement better when loaded.
