Which variants this covers
Six generations are listed, B3 through B8, in saloon and Variant estate form, in front-wheel drive and 4MOTION. The chassis code is printed on the door sticker and is the only reliable way to narrow this page — model years overlap at every changeover. Cars ordered with sports chassis or adaptive damping use their own part numbers. For other Volkswagens see Volkswagen suspension.
Choosing between the ranges
Bilstein B4 and Bilstein B6 are stocked almost equally here, which reflects how Passats are used. B4 is the OE-comparable replacement that returns a worn car to its factory ride — the right choice for a high-mileage estate doing motorway miles. B6 is firmer at the same ride height and controls body movement better when the car is loaded, at some cost in comfort. Bilstein B12 lowers a standard car on shortened dampers with matched springs. Bilstein B8 is shortened and suits only a car already lowered by roughly 30–40 mm. Bilstein B14 and B16 coilovers let you set ride height directly. No Tein ranges are stocked for the Passat.
What to check before ordering
Front and rear are separate parts; fit in axle pairs, renew strut bearings and protection kits alongside, and align afterwards. The Passat caveat is load: the Variant estate carries different rear damping from the saloon, and cars with self-levelling rear suspension differ again. If the car regularly tows or runs loaded, B6 holds the back end better than B4.
Common questions for this chassis
Where is my chassis code? On the door sticker. Use it rather than the registration year — generations overlap.
Saloon and estate the same? At the front usually; at the rear often not.
Is Tein available? Not currently for the Passat — this page is Bilstein only.
