Performance

B8 is the shortened damper. Its body and stroke are cut down so it works correctly on a car already lowered by sport springs — fitting a full-length damper to a lowered car runs it out of travel and destroys the ride. B8 restores proper travel, with performance valving to match. Pair it with lowering springs; it is not intended for standard ride height. This unit is an upside-down monotube: the larger-diameter body is at the top, reducing unsprung weight and stiffening the strut against bending loads.

Fitment

Fits BMW 5 Series (E39), 09/1995–12/2003, RWD — see the full list below. Verify fitment using the vehicle compatibility checker above. OEM References: 1 096 865, 31 31 1 096 865, 1 096 857, 31 31 1 096 857.

What's Included

One Bilstein B8 damper unit for the front axle (either side) — a single shock absorber, not a pair and not an axle set. Order two to do an axle, four for the whole car. Mounting is top pin. Bump stops, dust covers, top mounts and fixings are not included.

Warranty

Backed by Bilstein's manufacturer warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. Cover assumes correct installation, the correct tightening torques, and serviceable bump stops and dust covers. A damper run without its protection parts will be scored by road grit — that is wear, not a defect.
