Bilstein B12 vs B14: Which Kit Matches Your Build?

By the Suspengo Technical Team · Published 2026-09-04 · Last reviewed 2026-09-27

Quick answer: The B12 Pro-Kit drops the car a fixed 30–40 mm — fit and forget. The B14 coilover lets you dial in 30–60 mm of drop before fitment. Both pair a factory-tuned monotube damper with a matched spring: no guesswork, no compatibility risk. If you do not need height adjustability, choose the B12.

Bilstein B12 and B14 suspension kits

B12 or B14: the short answer

Both kits solve the same problem — damper and spring tuned together at the factory, no guesswork on your part. The difference is what you can do with ride height before you bolt them on. The B12 Pro-Kit fixes the drop at roughly 30–40 mm below standard; one height, one choice, fit and forget. The B14 coilover kit gives you a threaded spring perch so you can dial in anywhere from 30 to 60 mm of drop on the bench before the strut goes in. If that flexibility is not something you need, the B12 is the simpler and equally capable choice.

B12 vs B14: direct comparison

Bilstein B12 Pro-Kit Bilstein B14 coilover kit
What you get Monotube sport damper + lowering spring, factory-matched Monotube sport damper + height-adjustable spring perch, factory-matched
Ride height drop Fixed: typically 30–40 mm below standard Adjustable: 30–60 mm, set on the bench before fitment
Height adjustability None — one position, one height Yes — threaded perch, set pre-fitment; not adjustable under load
Rebound adjustability None None — for click-adjustable rebound, look at full coilovers
Valving Factory-matched to the kit's spring rate Factory-matched to the kit's spring rate
Best for Road drivers who want a lower, sportier setup without tuning Drivers who need precise height control before fitment — modified engine bays, tight tyre clearance, staged builds
Not for Drivers targeting more than 40 mm of drop, or OEM-height replacement Drivers who need in-car height adjustment — that requires a full coilover

Bilstein B12 Pro-Kit — fixed drop, factory-matched

The B12 is a complete damper-and-spring kit in one box. Bilstein matches a monotube sport damper to a progressively wound lowering spring — the spring rate is engineered for that exact damper, not approximated. Ride height drops 30–40 mm depending on the application; the car sits lower, the handling is sharper, and the combination was validated as a unit before it left the factory.

Because the height is fixed, fitting is straightforward: no perch adjustment, no measuring, no second-guessing. That is also the B12's limit: if your target drop exceeds 40 mm, or if you need to match a specific clearance before fitment, the B14 is the better tool.

Bilstein B14 coilover kit — dial in your height before fitment

The B14 uses the same monotube damper as the B12 but adds a threaded spring perch on the damper body. Before the car goes on the lift, you set the perch to your target height — 30 mm, 45 mm, 60 mm of drop, whatever the build calls for. Once the strut is back in and the car sits on its wheels, the height is fixed until you remove it again.

That pre-fitment window is the B14's purpose. It matters when you have tight tyre clearance, when the car is already on modified suspension and you need to correct the height precisely, or when you are building to a specific stance before other work. If you need to adjust height while driving — track days, seasonal adjustment, load changes — you need a full coilover system. The B14 adjusts once, on the bench.

Which car and driver type suits which

  • Daily driver, lower and sharper than standard: B12 Pro-Kit. Fixed setup, no decisions, road-optimised valving.
  • Modified car with specific clearance or stance requirements: B14. Set the height to the millimetre on the bench before fitment.
  • Car already running aftermarket springs: Neither — use a B8 damper matched to a lowered ride height, not a kit that includes its own springs.
  • Track car or serious road-track dual use: Full coilover. Both the B12 and B14 use fixed valving; neither delivers the adjustable rebound control changing conditions require.
  • Worn OEM-height suspension: B4 or B6, not a kit. Both kits lower the car — if you want standard ride height restored, a kit is the wrong product.

Why a matched kit — the pairing problem explained

Buying a damper and a spring from two different ranges feels like the flexible option. In practice, it creates a valving problem nobody warns you about. Damper valving and spring rate are tuned together. A B6 damper calibrated for a 160 N/mm spring behaves differently with a 120 N/mm spring — it overdamps at low speeds and feels crashy on fast compressions. The result is a suspension that is technically new but handles worse than the worn setup it replaced.

A matched kit removes that risk. Both the B12 and B14 ship as factory-validated pairings — every spring rate chosen for the specific damper it travels with, every combination road-tested before it leaves the factory.

When a kit is the wrong answer

  • Your car needs OEM-height components: Both kits lower the car. For worn standard-height replacement, use the B4 or B6 instead.
  • You already have aftermarket springs: A kit includes its own springs. If you want to keep springs you already have, buy a B8 damper instead.
  • You need frequent height changes: The B14 sets height before fitment, not while driving. For events requiring different ride heights, a coilover with in-car adjustment is the correct product.
  • Your target exceeds 60 mm of drop: At that extreme, droop travel becomes marginal. Evaluate a purpose-built coilover system instead.

Matching a B12 or B14 to your car

Both kits are chassis-specific. A B12 for a Golf Mk5 uses different spring rates and damper valving than one for a 3 Series E90. Installation notes

  • Replace front and rear axles as a pair — mixing an old damper-spring combination with a new kit creates asymmetric handling.
  • A four-wheel alignment is mandatory after fitting any kit that changes ride height.
  • Check strut top mounts during the same service — the strut comes out anyway, and a worn mount doubles your labour cost if you return for it six months later. See Strut bearing failure: symptoms and fix.
  • Some applications require a complete strut assembly. Confirm your fitment before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

Can I fit a B12 kit to a car with worn springs?
The B12 includes its own springs — the existing springs are removed and discarded. The condition of your current springs does not affect the installation.
Will a B12 or B14 fit with my existing top mounts?
In most applications, yes. If the top mounts are worn (a standstill-steering knock test will reveal this), replace them at the same time. The cost of a second strut removal later is higher than the mount itself.
The B14 says "adjustable" — can I adjust the height while the car is on the ground?
No. The B14's spring perch is set on the bench before fitment. Adjusting it under load requires removing the strut. If you need frequent height changes, look at full coilovers with in-car adjustment instead.
Is the B12 or B14 suitable for a car I also use on a track?
Both kits are tuned for road use with fixed valving. For mixed road and track use, the B14 is the better starting point — you can set the ride height for your track days on the bench before fitment. For serious track use, a full coilover system delivers the adjustable rebound control both kits lack.
I bought the B12 but my ride height is not what I expected. What happened?
Ride height after fitting a kit depends on the spring rate relative to your car's kerb weight, which varies by spec, fuel load, and wear state. The stated drop is a typical figure, not a guarantee for your exact vehicle. If you need precise height control, the B14 lets you set it before fitment.
