The most common suspension mistake: fitting B8 to a standard-height car
Every year, drivers order Bilstein B8 dampers, fit them to a car at factory ride height, and describe the result as worse than the worn shocks they replaced. They are right. The B8 is a shortened damper body engineered for a car already lowered 30–40 mm on aftermarket springs. On a standard-height car, the B8 exhausts its droop travel at rest — it cannot extend fully — and every bump forces it into a range it was never designed for. The ride is harsh, the handling is unpredictable, and the damper wears prematurely.

Bilstein B4 — quality OEM replacement
The B4 replicates the factory damping curve of the original equipment damper. It is the correct choice when the car is used for everyday driving at factory ride height and the goal is to restore factory handling, not upgrade it. Fitting a B4 removes the uncertainty of a worn damper without altering the car's character.

Bilstein B6 — more damping force, same ride height
The B6 uses the same external dimensions as the B4 — full-length damper body, same mounting points — but with higher internal gas pressure and firmer valving. Under cornering the car rolls less. Under braking the nose dives less. At speed over rough surfaces the damper recovers from extension faster. These differences are felt from the first drive and improve at higher speeds and harder driving.
Because the B6 is full-length, it works only at factory ride height. A car already lowered needs the B8 below.

Bilstein B8 — engineered for lowered cars
The B8 has a shortened damper body. Bilstein removes approximately 30–40 mm from the stroke so that a car lowered on aftermarket springs uses the middle of the damper's travel at rest, not the bottom. On a standard-height car the B8 sits near full compression — almost no droop travel remains. Every pothole compresses it against its internal stop, transmitting the full impact through the chassis and causing rapid wear.
The B8 is the right choice in exactly one situation: the car has been lowered on aftermarket springs and the original-length damper is now running at the limit of its compression stroke. The B8 restores correct operating range.

Which should you choose?
- Standard ride height, worn dampers: B4 — matches factory specification.
- Standard ride height, want firmer sport handling: B6 — full-length body, higher gas pressure, significantly better body control.
- Already lowered 30–40 mm on aftermarket springs: B8 — shortened body, correct operating position.
- Already lowered, want to lower further: Consider a coilover kit — fitting a B8 then lowering further repeats the problem.
If you are unsure whether your car has been lowered: measure the ride height against the manufacturer's specification. Any reduction beyond 20 mm makes the B8 worth considering.
Installation notes
- Both B4 and B6 are direct replacements for OEM dampers and work with the original springs.
- Replace in axle pairs: both fronts or both rears together. Mixing old and new creates asymmetric damping that worsens handling.
- A four-wheel alignment is recommended after any damper change that alters ride height.

- What is the difference between B4 and B6 if the body length is the same?

- Will a B6 change my ride height?
- No. The B6 is a direct dimensional replacement for the B4. It does not change ride height. If you want to lower the car, pair aftermarket springs with a B8 damper to match the shorter stroke.
- Do I need to replace all four dampers?
- Replace in axle pairs at minimum — both fronts or both rears together. A single replacement creates asymmetric damping that degrades handling. Replacing all four at once gives the most predictable result.
- I lowered my car on aftermarket springs but kept the B4. Now it knocks. Why?
- The B4 is running near the limit of its compression stroke because the car is too low for its length. The knocking is the damper hitting its internal stop. Fit a B8 to restore correct operating range for the new ride height.
