This article explains the cost structure of shock absorber replacement: what parts cost, what labour costs, why replacing in axle pairs is standard practice, and what makes one workshop quote different from another. The two costs: parts and labour
Parts cost
A shock absorber is sold as a single unit. Most passenger cars use four — one per corner — although some configurations use two struts at the front and two separate shock absorbers at the rear, which affects which parts are needed.
The cost of the part itself varies by:
- Brand and specification: An OEM-quality replacement (Bilstein B4, KYB Excel-G) costs more than an economy unit and significantly less than a high-performance coilover kit. Most drivers replacing worn originals should be comparing OEM-quality units, not economy parts.
- Vehicle complexity: A common hatchback has straightforward, widely available shock absorbers. A prestige saloon or SUV with electronically controlled suspension requires brand-matched units and often additional components.
- Axle position: Front shock absorbers are often more expensive than rear units because they carry more load and, on strut-type suspensions, include additional components.

Labour cost
A competent workshop typically takes 45–90 minutes to replace a single shock absorber, depending on:
- Suspension design: A MacPherson strut requires the spring to be removed and compressed — a job that needs a spring compressor and takes longer than a simple shock absorber swap on a double-wishbone or multi-link rear.
- Condition: Seized or corroded fasteners add time. Rust is common on cars in high-salt environments or with high mileage.
- Top mounts and bearings: It is standard practice to replace the strut top mount bearing when the front strut is apart. If worn, the mount causes a knocking noise and steering that does not self-centre. This is a separate part with a separate cost.
Most workshops quote by the job, not the hour, for standard shock absorber replacement. Ask whether the quote includes disposal of the old parts, alignment, and top mount replacement if applicable.
Why replace in axle pairs?
The most common mistake in shock absorber replacement is replacing only the worn unit on one side of an axle. Here is why that is a problem:
Shock absorbers degrade gradually. By the time one is worn enough to fail visibly, the other on the same axle has accumulated the same mileage under the same conditions and is close to the same state. Replacing one leaves a significant difference in damping force between the left and right sides of the axle. Under cornering or emergency braking, the car will behave asymmetrically — the side with the new damper controls body movement; the side with the old one does not. In normal driving this feels like a pull or a vague steering response. In emergency situations it can reduce control.
A reputable workshop will refuse to replace a single shock absorber on an axle and will quote you for the pair. If a workshop offers to replace only the one that has failed, ask why.
In practice: replace the front pair or the rear pair. If the car has covered more than 60,000 km and you are already disturbing one axle, replacing all four in the same pass eliminates the cost of a second labour session within a short interval.

What makes one quote higher than another?
A higher workshop quote is not automatically worse value. Assess what is included:
- Parts quality: Economy shock absorbers fail faster. An OEM-quality unit from Bilstein, KYB, or Sachs costs more to supply but lasts longer. Ask which brand is in the quote.
- Additional components: A quote that includes top mounts, bump stops, and alignment will be higher than one for shock absorbers alone — but the lower-cost quote often becomes more expensive when those items are added later.
- Alignment included: Post-replacement wheel alignment is not optional if the car's geometry has changed. A quote that omits it will have that cost added at the end.
- Labour rate: Workshop labour rates vary by region and by the type of workshop. Dealer service tends to cost more; specialist independent workshops are often competitive on both rate and quality.
How to use this to judge a quote
- Identify which axle is quoted (front pair, rear pair, all four).

- Calculate approximate parts cost × 2 (axle pair). The remainder is labour plus any additional components.

- How many shock absorbers does a car have?
- Most passenger cars have four — one per corner. Some rear suspension designs use a separate coil spring and shock absorber rather than a combined strut, which can affect how they are replaced but not how many there are.
- How often should shock absorbers be replaced?

- Can I replace just one shock absorber?
- Technically yes, but in practice no. The unit on the opposite side of the same axle has accumulated the same wear. Replacing only one creates asymmetric damping that makes the car pull and can affect handling under emergency conditions. Always replace the axle pair.
- Do I need a wheel alignment after replacing shock absorbers?
- Yes, if the ride height changes. Many shock absorber replacements on standard-height cars will not significantly change geometry, but a post-replacement alignment check is inexpensive insurance. If you are also changing springs or ride height, alignment is not optional.
- Is it worth fitting premium shock absorbers?
- For most drivers, yes. The cost difference between a budget unit and an OEM-quality replacement (such as a Bilstein B4) is modest relative to total labour cost, and the quality unit lasts significantly longer. The labour cost is the same either way, so the cheaper route is usually the one that does not require a repeat visit in 18 months.
